Case Study:
Internal Interview Process Assures the
Right Candidate for the Job and Gives Everyone a Fair Chance

Challenge

A company had an opening for an executive position. The client chose to use this opportunity to upgrade the position requirements and responsibilities to result in improved leadership, business development and employee mentoring. The company had a preference for internal promotions and was aware that some of the current employees were interested in the position. Employees had previously perceived the company's hiring-from-within practices as a political process: applied inconsistently and with little follow-up. The client did wish to fairly consider all internal candidates and ensure the chosen candidate possessed the skills necessary to succeed in the position. At the same time, the company wanted an external candidate search.

Solution

HR Dallas, LLC worked with key managers to identify required skill sets and goals for the upgraded position. The client and HRD worked together to develop a process and response packet for interested candidates to complete. The packet was designed to qualify candidates by requiring them to demonstrate their abilities in the primary required skill sets, as well as demonstrate their leadership style and skills. The completed packets were evaluated by an internal review panel. Candidates who successfully completed this phase were interviewed by a panel of four executives and a manager with HRD. To complete the process external candidates were treated in a similar fashion and the candidate was ultimately selected. The client’s HR department notified unsuccessful candidates and worked with the President to extend an offer of employment to the chosen candidate.

Result

The company was able to identify and define the skills necessary for an executive who would focus on the business goals. All internal candidates were given equal consideration and received follow-up regarding their status, which helped maintain positive relations among unsuccessful candidates. Because the screening process required that candidates demonstrate they possessed the required skills, the company was confident in their hiring decision and was able to staff this role with an individual who would increase profitability.
